We are now officially entering auto show season, and all throughout the country, owners of classic, antique, and sports cars are gearing up to attend some of the most prominent shows of the season. When a car is one of a kind, car enthusiasts will go to any length to keep it in near perfect condition, including taking extra precautions while traveling. Michael Snow of TrailersPlus has worked with auto enthusiasts for over 25 years and hopes to educate car owners about the importance of a car trailer for transport. Within this blog, Michael Snow of TrailersPlus will break down what makes a great trailer and how best to choose your car trailer for this auto show season.

Open or Enclosed

When renting or buying a trailer intended to haul an antique or show car, you first need to consider whether or not you will need an open or enclosed trailer. Most often, antique car owners will choose an enclosed trailer to ensure that their car is not exposed to the elements while traveling and will not receive any damage from stones or debris kicked up during travel. However, enclosed trailers are significantly more expensive, often costing more than double the price of an open trailer. If you intend on traveling short distances and are hoping to keep costs down, you may want to consider an open trailer.

Best Trailer Size for Cars

TrailersPlus offers customers a wide range of trailer sizes made to accommodate a number of cars and vehicles. The correct size trailer for you will depend on budget, the size of your car/ cars, and the number of cars you intend on hauling. Traditionally, the smallest enclosed trailer for vehicles will be 8 ft x 16 ft, which will often be more than enough room to haul a sedan or truck.

Maximum Weight

As always, it is important to be aware of weight when choosing a trailer. The weight of the trailer will determine the size of the tow vehicle needed and the payload it will be able to haul. Before looking at trailers, you must know:

  • Your truck’s towing capacity
  • The hauled vehicles weight

On average, classic cars or antique cars will be heavier than modern race or sports cars. Knowing the exact weight of the car you intend to haul will be crucial when choosing the car hauler trailer and preventing any damage to your hauling track.
